Lovells expands energy team in South East Asia

20 January 2009

Lovells announces the arrival of oil and gas specialist Brian Cassidy and Indonesian energy expert Andi Haryanto, both to be based in Singapore.  The expansion of the team follows on from the arrival of leading energy partner Brad Roach along with associate Janine Gill from White & Case in July 2008.

Brian Cassidy has joined Lovells in Singapore as Of Counsel.  He specialises in oil and gas work and has over 12 years experience in the upstream oil and gas sector working and advising on projects, joint ventures and corporate/asset acquisitions and disposals. He has been involved in projects in The United Kingdom, Ireland, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Yemen, Sakhalin, the Falkland Islands, France, Liberia, Turkey, Ukraine, East Timor, Libya and Iraq.  Brian was previously a partner with leading Scottish firm McGrigors and was based in Edinburgh.

Andi Haryanto will join the Singapore office in early March.   Andi is currently working in the Legal Division of BPMIGAS, the Indonesian Executive Agency for Upstream Oil and Gas Activity, and has 5 years of experience, including extensive exposure to the development of gas projects in Indonesia.  He provides unique insight and expertise in the Indonesian oil and gas sector.

Brad Roach's team have advised on a series of high profile deals since their arrival, including: representing PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk. in relation to the development of the proposed 2 million tonne per annum Donggi-Senoro LNG Project in Sulawesi, Indonesia; the recent successful bids for oil and gas exploration rights in Indonesia by Salamander Energy plc and Murphy Overseas Ventures Inc.; advising an Asian LNG importer in respect of its participation in a greenfield LNG project in Nigeria; and, other exploration and production companies in relation to their operations in Malaysia and Vietnam.

Commenting on the hires, partner Brad Roach said:

"I am very pleased that we have been able to expand our team so quickly since my arrival in July 2008, with lawyers of the calibre of Brian and Andi, as both bring considerable strength and experience to our team.

At an international level, oil and gas lawyers of Brian's calibre are in short supply, so we are delighted that Brian has joined us. Brian has worked around the world in a number of countries, and his regional experience in frontier markets and commercial maturity will be of considerable assistance to our clients.

A market of particular importance to many of our oil and gas clients is Indonesia. When Andi Haryanto joins in March, we will be unique amongst international law firms in having a genuine Indonesian oil and gas specialist on the team. Andi is an extremely bright and energetic lawyer, and his regulatory and transactional experience in Indonesia will be invaluable to many of our clients.

The arrival of Brian and Andi bolsters our specialist core oil and gas team of lawyers who know the business and have considerable industry experience, which will enable us to continue to provide commercially focussed, pragmatic and first class legal advice to our clients throughout the region. "

Commenting today, Brian Cassidy added:

"Lovells has earned an impressive reputation in the region for oil and gas work and is able to leverage one of the strongest international networks in what is an inherently global sector. One of the key factors in influencing my decision to join the team are the very close relationships they have with an impressive list of oil and gas clients."
