We are one of the largest international law firms in Beijing and our Shanghai office has grown rapidly since being established in late 2003.  We were ranked third in the PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook (formerly Global Counsel 3000) rankings of all major foreign and domestic law firms in China in 2004 and 2005 in recognition of our capabilities across all major practice areas in China.

Our practice covers:
  • in-bound and outbound corporate investment
  • mergers and acquisitions
  • telecommunications/IT
  • intellectual property
  • construction and infrastructure projects
  • equity capital markets
  • venture capital and private equity
  • banking and finance
  • business reconstruction, debt rescheduling and insolvency
  • dispute resolution
  • real property.
In addition to advising on foreign direct investment in the PRC, we have built a leading position with both Chinese and foreign clients in out-bound corporate investment.  Major projects include acting as international legal counsel for the lead domestic investor in the National Stadium and National Swimming Centre projects for the Beijing 2008 Olympics, acting as legal counsel for a major Chinese foreign trade enterprise specializing in trading of metals and minerals in connection with its off-shore acquisition projects and acting as legal advisers for foreign investors in the largest SOE revitalization project in North-East China approved by the State Council.

We are ranked in the first tier in the IP and telecom/IT markets in China.  We have one of the premier IP practices in China, which handles cross border and domestic litigation enforcement, as well as technology transfer, licensing and other non-contentious matters.  We have particular strength in patent litigation and counselling.

Our telecom/IT lawyers are recognized experts in basic and value-added telecom investment in China. Recent projects include basic telecommunications operations and infrastructure projects, internet data centres, cable modem broadband access projects, public and closed tenders, ISP and ICP projects, receivables backed financings for equipment vendors, and technology licences and alliances.

We also advise on a full range of corporate finance matters, including IPOs, rights issues, private placements and Hong Kong stock market and securities related transactions. We regularly advise international institutional and financial investors in devising new investment models for their private equity investments, corporate venturing and portfolio investment in the PRC.

The All China Lawyers Association (ACLA) and Lovells have cooperated on the presentation of a highly-acclaimed and innovative series of practical legal skills training courses for both licensed Chinese lawyers and in-house corporate legal counsel for Chinese corporations. More than 3,000 Chinese lawyers have attended more than 300 hours of live training co-sponsored by the ACLA and Lovells. Robert Lewis, the managing partner of the Beijing office, has been appointed as the only foreign expert on the ACLA Legal Education Committee.

Lovells also has co-operated with the Law and Policy Bureau of the State-owned Asset Supervision and Administration Commission of China (SASAC) and the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) on a range of programmes relating to the development of legal risk management strategies for Chinese companies.
