In addition to Lovells' established and recognised expertise in the areas of data protection and privacy, we act for clients in relation to other "information management" issues, particularly the related areas of confidentiality and information disclosure.

The latter area of law is of increasing significance for our clients given the UK's implementation in January 2005 of the general right to information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, with which other UK and EU regimes will co-exist.

In September 2004 we hosted a well-attended seminar for clients on the risks and opportunities presented by the new Act, by reference to experience in other jurisdictions around the world. Working in conjunction with the Constitution Unit at UCL, we have also produced a Guide for Business to the Act.

In relation to confidentiality, we advise on all aspects of the legal protection of rights in trade secrets and other confidential information and have acted for both claimants and defendants in actions for misuse of confidential information including applying for and defending applications for interim relief.
