Lovells' International Arbitration group is widely recognised as a leading practice for resolving disputes through arbitration and consistently ranked in the top tiers of the legal directories; the Chambers UK Directory 2008 commented that we were “practical, proactive and highly cost-conscious, the firm is always looking for ways to resolve disputes rather than needlessly stretching them out.”  The Legal 500 Directory 2008 described partners in the group as "pragmatic, practical and user-friendly."  Last year we were ranked eighth in the Global Arbitration Review survey, which described us as having "one of the busiest arbitration practices around".

The international arbitration group is a distinct area of specialisation within Lovells' dispute resolution practice.  The group has the resources and expertise to handle the most complex arbitrations worldwide, covering a wide range of industry sectors including construction, engineering, energy, insurance, international trade and investment, and financial services.  We represent clients in arbitrations under many different arbitral rules in a host of different countries, including the UNCITRAL rules and the rules of major international institutions such as ICSID, SCC Institute, the AAA/ICDR, ICC, LCIA, DIFC and CIETAC, as well as national institutions and trade associations and under the arbitral laws of many different countries.

We regularly deal with parties, tribunals and witnesses from all types of legal and commercial cultures.  We also frequently advise clients on the protections afforded by Bilateral and Multilateral Investment Treaties and have acted on a number of Bilateral Investment Treaty claims, one of which was, we believe, the first to allege breaches of both the Energy Charter Treaty and a bilateral investment treaty.

Given that arbitration is a private and confidential process, knowledge of the arbitral institutions and first-hand experience of the people likely to be appointed as arbitrators are crucial factors for a successful arbitration. We have that knowledge, through representing clients in cases and through our active participation in and membership of the leading international arbitral organisations.

Members of our practice are regularly appointed as arbitrators in international arbitrations (both institutional and non-institutional) and are active participants in leading arbitral institutions including the ICC Arbitration Commission in the UK, France and Germany, the German Institute of Arbitration, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Dubai International Arbitration Centre, the LCIA and the Arbitration Committee of the International Bar Association.
