Jacques Derenne is a graduate of the University of Liège and of the College of Europe, Bruges. Since 1988, he has specialised in EU law. Jacques advises on all aspects of EU law and in particular on EU, Belgian and French competition law (cartels, abuses of dominance, mergers and State aid). He has extensive experience in State aid law as well as in regulated industries (e.g., tobacco) and in the newly liberalised markets (postal services, telecommunications and satellite services, the audiovisual sector - broadcasting, air transport and energy). In these sectors, he has in particular been specifically advising on cross-subsidies, M&A restructuring and State aid issues arising from the diversification of former legal monopolies.
Jacques regularly acts in cases before the European Commission, the Court of First Instance and the Court of Justice of the European Communities as well as before Belgian and French courts and various regulatory bodies.
Jacques is a member of the Scientific Council of the Global Competition Law Centre (GCLC) at the College of Europe, Bruges. In 2006, he co-directed and authored a seminal study for the European Commission on State aid enforcement at EU and national level. In September 2006, he co-directed a landmark GCLC conference on economic analysis and State aid with Commissioner Kroes.
Jacques is a professor of competition law at the (French speaking) Brussels Bar (CAPA, Certificat d'Aptitude à la Profession d'Avocat). He is also Mâitre de Conférences at the University of Liège in 2006-07 where he lectures on State aid law (DEA European and IP law).
Jacques is the author of the 'Memento des subsides' (State aid; Kluwer, 15th ed., 2003) and has published widely on EU and Belgian law issues (competition, EU litigation, posts and telecoms, IPR, aviation, electronic commerce, product liability, etc.).
Jacques is regularly listed as a leading State aid practitioner.
