After qualification, John was for seven years, including as a partner, in the firm's corporate tax group, with an emphasis on international transactions. This led to a move into the firm's financial department in 1986 and then into the main corporate area in 1987, continuing work primarily on international mergers and acquisitions and restructurings.
He established the firm's Paris office at the beginning of 1990 where he was based until 1998. He retains a broad international prospective in all of his work.
John's main focus now is on international combinations, joint ventures, acquisitions and restructurings within the firm's energy practice which he heads up. This work in relation to the energy practice has involved acquisitions, disposals and restructuring of electricity,gas and general utilities as well as the North Sea and other oil and gas interests, pipeline contacts and other work in relation to both onshore and offshore installations, including structuring and unwinding joint ventures. He has also advised on the proposed flotation of a domestic gas and electricity supply business, disposal of domestic electricity and gas business and is currently advising on the structuring of a consortium to bid for oil extraction rights in the Middle East.
