Joe McCullough
Joe heads the firm's US insurance and reinsurance practice and co-chairs the firm's international reinsurance dispute resolution practice. A partner in the Chicago office, Joe has devoted his practice over the past two decades to counseling insurance and reinsurance companies. Joe has acted as counsel to insurers and reinsurers in dozens of arbitrations and court proceedings across the US, as well as in Bermuda, England, and Continental Europe, including some of the highest profile cases in the industry.
Joe regularly advises clients on a wide range of issues including worker's compensation carve out and spiral business; life, personal accident and medical reinsurance issues; common account reinsurance issues; coverage of declaratory judgment, loss adjustment and monitoring counsel expenses; rescission claims; reinsurance pooling arrangements; petitions for pre-answer security; letter of credit disputes; follow the fortunes and follow the settlements doctines, insurer insolvency; commutations; estimation and acceleration of claims; exit strategies and financial solutions for problem books of business; insurance company redomestications; set-offs; aggregation and allocation of losses; contract drafting; broker funding of losses; records inspection rights, and fraud.
Joe is a frequent contributor to various industry publications, including ReActions and Best's Review. He has organized, chaired and spoken at numerous reinsurance seminars, conferences and workshops in East Asia, the U.S., the U.K., and Continental Europe. Joe has been recognized as a leader in his field by the International Who's Who of Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers, as well as Chambers & Partners Directory of America's Leading Business Lawyers.
Joe graduated, with high honors, from Georgetown University. He received his law degree, cum laude, from Northwestern University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review and the Order of the Coif. He received a Masters in European Law, with high honors, from the University of Ghent, Belgium, and participated in the International Business Legal Studies program at Exeter University in England.
